“I watched Emilia Pérez with people, and every time she had a scene, we looked at each other and said, ‘Wow, what is this?” shared Derbez.

On the podcast, host Gaby Meza acknowledged Gomez’s talent but critiqued her performance, citing the language barrier. “Spanish isn’t her primary, secondary, or even fifth language,” Meza remarked. “She doesn’t seem to understand what she’s saying, and without that understanding, her acting lacks nuance,” she added.

Following the controversy, Derbez publicly apologized to Gomez on TikTok, admitting his remarks were thoughtless. “I sincerely apologize for my careless comments—they are indefensible and contradict everything I stand for,” he wrote.
Derbez highlighted the importance of Latinos supporting each other and praised Gomez’s career and kind heart. “Emilia Pérez deserves celebration, not to be diminished by my thoughtless remarks. I’ve learned an important lesson from this,” he concluded.
